Expanding the Flute's Voice: An Introduction to Extended Techniques
with Shelby Miller
Extended techniques on the flute are becoming ever present in 21st century music. Not just in the flute repertoire, but also in the orchestral and wind band repertoire as well! The goal of this workshop is to help younger students and amateur flutists receive an introduction into these techniques and lower the uncertainty and discomfort in exploring new sounds on the flute in an environment that holds no judgement. This workshop will engage all ages and levels in not only learning about the interesting and different extended techniques the flute can produce, but we will also take time to try these techniques out with guidance and error correction.

Finding Your Resonance: Warm-up & Non-linear Improv Workshop
with Cris Dohler Rodas
"Finding Your Resonance" is a workshop where participants will be led through gentle joint-freeing and grounding exercises, followed by an in-depth long-tone warm-up which will integrate singing & humming to explore our bodies' natural resonance. Once participants are warmed up, they will be led through a non-linear improvisation session with a drone. Our field has a deeply ingrained culture of perfectionism and capitalism, which unfortunately pulls us away from the essence of what it is to be an artist who works with sound. This workshop was born out of a developing yoga practice and personal practice of improvising as a way to liberate the sound and expressive capabilities. Through participating in the workshop, flutists will learn how to access their true voice and promote longevity.

Practical Uses of Music Theory for Flutists
with Timothy Mullins
| Many flutists struggle to see how music theory applies to what they play. Most of the current resources available for flutists seldom explain basic music theory terminology and how it benefits playing music. It is often up to the teacher to try to bridge these gaps – that is, if one has a teacher who can explain how to approach using a method book or practice a piece of music effectively. Through my research, I examine how to alleviate these deficiencies in connecting music theory to practical techniques and how it can enhance the way one plays, whether it be for oneself or for one's students. Rather than learning music theory as separate elements outside of music, you can define them through musical examples, be it from solos, ensemble pieces, or even your own melodic creation! |

Recital: Pages From My Diary – Navigating Identity Through Sound
with Joshua Stine, Cris Dohler Rodas & Jere Hunt
"Pages From My Diary" from Dr. Joshua Stine explores and celebrates the queer experience across generations. Honoring the “Missing Voices” of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the album features Lee Gannon’s DERELICT, composed in 1989 at the height of the crisis, which uses extended techniques to musically destroy a pitch set representing the virus. The program pairs these historical perspectives with works by living creators, including Dominic Valadez’s Violet Ridge and Matthew-John Knights’s Call Me Mother. By amplifying voices that insist on being heard, this album echoes Harvey Milk’s famous words: “Hope will never be silent.”

Recital: Atmospheres
with Cate Hummel
Sea Level by Mark Hagerty was composed at and below sea level outside Amsterdam when an unusually sunny April sped the profusion of plant and animal life in and around the canals of the Dutch countryside. Though the work is abstract, landscape, cloud formations, weather, shifting light, and animal life are suggested in changing colors and textures. Sea Level was premiered at the NFA convention by Kimberly Reighley According to composer, Alexandra Gardner, Fade is an exploration of the nature of human memory; which memories "stick" with us, the ways in which memories transform and mutate over time, and how they can seem to vanish, only to reappear at later unexpected moments. Fade was commissioned by the NFA for the 2019 Young Artist Competition.

Recital: Oh, How the Flute Can Sing!
with Brandon LePage
“Oh, How The Flute Can Sing!” is a 25 minute solo flute program that aims to illuminate the flute’s profound connection to the human voice. This program explores the flute not merely as a melodic instrument, but as a living, breathing voice - capable of lyricism, speech, lament, and song. Each work on this program explores the sonorous and singing quality of the flute through the exploration of tone color, phrasing, extended techniques, and, in some cases, the literal inclusion of the performer's voice. Through works by Jennifer Higdon, Cherise D. Leiter, Katherine Hoover, and Timothy Hagen, this program traverses a rich emotional landscape, from lyrical beauty to raw expression and meditative calm. Ultimately, this program celebrates the flute as a singing instrument in the truest sense—o

Fruit Flies Like A Banana: 3 Performers. 20+ Pieces. 60 Minutes
with The Fourth Wall
Every performance of Fruit Flies… is different - from show order to parameters to repertoire. We're always adding new repertoire to specifically suit our audience (such as inside joke for primarily musician audiences or bringing in local celebrities in different towns) and finding new ways to make our friends and fans join in. Fruit Flies… was premiered at the IndyFringe Festival in August 2013 and has been performed at festivals, universities, schools, performing arts centers, and on computer screens across the country ever since. In 2022, Fruit Flies… jumped across the pond to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with over 50 performances.
