Session Description:

Laura will share a sneak peek of her new warmup book Modal Flute Warmup: Sound Discovery and Color Palette Expansion (Conway Publications, released December 2023) that includes six different types of exercises, all based on modes.

The book is designed to encourage discovery while engaging the flutist’s attention, imagination, curiosity, and creativity. Laura will guide flutists to use the exercises in a way that mindfully nurtures reflection, and she will invite flutists to explore how movement and awareness of both what we are doing and what we are thinking helps us connect more to our physical and musical expression.

Additionally Laura will share how the use of modes can spark the flutist’s attention and imagination, allowing an exploration of colors and tonalities they might not be familiar with—and simultaneously expanding technical flexibility with intervals and fingerings not common in tonal music—in a structured and imaginative way.
